Magic Island

Day 82 of 365. 22 days ago I posted a picture of this same bench, nearly underwater during the flooding of the Kanawha River. Looks idyllic now, no?

after the deluge

Day 60 of 365.
The rain, the melt, has all resulted in significant flooding. This is a picture of "Magic Island" park - which apparently actually used to be an island in the Kanawha River (according to the Charleston Daily Mail photographer I met today who was doing the same thing I was - shooting the deluge). He said "We called it "Magic" Island because when the water was high you couldn't see it, but when the water receded it appeared again like magic." The city filled in the gaps and made it into a park attached to the side of the Kanawha Blvd, right on the riverfront.
That park bench you see isn't usually covered by water. I tried to get closer, but I had to stop when I was squelching through over 2 inches of mud - the mud was left over after the water receded over night.
