Day 75 of 365.

A strange and beautiful day - beautiful, because of the weather and spring busting out all over the place - strange, because the dog was behaving oddly since last night, and a combo of circumstances caused us to take him to the Emergency Vet tonight. Good thing we did, too - last August he had pancreatitis; this spring he has hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. It appears that our big bouncy dog that looks so solid is a bit of a delicate flower when it comes to his gastrointestinal system. He has to stay overnight and be treated; hopefully he'll be better tomorrow. At least tonight we won't be awakened six times to let him out; but we do have to get up early tomorrow to bring him home.

Day 73 of 365.

It was raining most of the day, so I stayed inside with my books and the basketball games. Read a great Y/A book, "The Forest of Hands and Teeth" by Carrie Ryan. It was a great twist on how to survive the zombie apocalypse.

daffodil fields forever

Day 72 of 365.

I've been waiting for this grassy field, around the corner from our house, to bust out the daffodils. Now it has. I figure in another week ALL the daffodils will have come out and bloomed, and there will be a profusion of yellow.

Day 70 of 365.

Spring rains are here. The ivy will soon be out of control if we don't clip it back. I had another picture in mind for today, hopefully I'll be able to show it to you soon.

In other news, I got a good haircut today, and that is an immense relief.

  Come into my parlor
natural spring

Day 69 of 365.

The bright afternoon light made all the colors so strong today, it was lovely. I decided to try something different - black and white in the middle of the color. I still don't know what they are, these plants that make these twisty shoots that coil and cling to other plants and bushes, but they are all over my yard.

  Day 68.
put a lid on it

Day 68 of 365. I don't have a more interesting title today than that.

I poked around the Capitol area in the early evening gloom tonight; the first flowering saucer magnolias are out in the East End. It rained most of the day so it was a good day to add to my puddle series , especially when the clouds pulled away from the sun and gorgeous evening light streamed down.

  sunset
sunset over Sears

Day 65 of 365.

A rare sighting these days - sunset colors. In Charleston, the sun drops below the hills before we can watch it set; or we are not up high enough above the horizon to see it. Tonight we drove west, though, for dinner, at a time when we could actually see color in the sky. This isn't the best photo I've ever taken, or even the best today - but it's representative of the day, and my 365 photo collection didn't have any sunset in it yet. Hopefully I'll have opportunities to capture some great sunsets in Madison, WI, northern Minnesota, and the Adirondacks this summer.

A productive day at our chez - we took out the storm window and put in the screens, airing out the house; Blixa got a bath. Now he is fluffy and grumpy. I am making ginger lemon tea because I've been sneezing and I have that non-specific-feeling-sick kind of malaise.

Day 64 of 365.

A slow day for photos, but a very bright day. Cloudless. Warm. Sunny. I walked around and just enjoyed it. And I ran into this pugnacious little dude . Why do dogs always look at me so suspiciously?

Either that, or they react the way this other huge slobbery dog did; slobbering on my arm and then jumping up and licking the side of my face from bottom to top. Ew.

Day 62 of 365.

Sunlight, shadows, green things. Lovely weather today.

I love the bricks on our back patio. They're in a bad way, though - the roots of a large tree are pushing them up and out of place. Or at least, into slightly different places than they used to be. Roots do that.

  after the deluge
flood

Day 60 of 365.

The rain, the melt, has all resulted in significant flooding. This is a picture of "Magic Island" park - which apparently actually used to be an island in the Kanawha River (according to the Charleston Daily Mail photographer I met today who was doing the same thing I was - shooting the deluge). He said "We called it "Magic" Island because when the water was high you couldn't see it, but when the water receded it appeared again like magic." The city filled in the gaps and made it into a park attached to the side of the Kanawha Blvd, right on the riverfront.

That park bench you see isn't usually covered by water. I tried to get closer, but I had to stop when I was squelching through over 2 inches of mud - the mud was left over after the water receded over night.

behind the scenes at the museum
turtle plant

Day 59 of 365.

This turtle plant, seen in the C. Fred Edwards conservatory at the Huntington Museum of Art, reminded me of the geography of West Virginia. Nobody was in the conservatory but myself for a half an hour - it was blissful. They've also got a really great exhibit of Graphic Novel & Comic book art right now.

crossing the path

Day 58 of 365.

On this rain-soaked day, I made a small road trip with my friend Blair. We went to Parkersburg, home of TransAllegheny Books . I promise I was good, though - I only brought home three books. We had a marvellous time, though, poking around this bookstore that's housed in a former Carnegie Library Building, and enjoying the cats who are in residence at the bookstore. You can see one of those crossing my path in the photo above.

We also hit up Market Street Yarn, of course, and then discovered that the Star of India restaurant has a delicious buffet, with more heat than Sitar in Charleston. Excellent. It was great to catch-up on a few months of happenings, too.

A satisfying day.

south charleston indian mound

Day 56 of 365. A familiar site to people around here - the Indian Mound in South Charleston, known simply as "the Mound". They built stairs going up it, and that's a bench you see at the top. That doesn't seem quite right to me.

  rites of spring
rites of spring

Day 54 of 365.

A (lemon) slice of my life.

My friends, the temperatures were in the 60s today. So this afternoon I walked downtown to the post office, camera in hand, and walked back up to my neighborhood via Bridge Rd. Bridge Rd. is steep, so I was ready for a cool beverage by the time these young entrepreneurs harangued me at the corner of Bridge Rd. & Grosscup. I was planning to walk up Grosscup anyway. I was pleased to pay my 50 cents (discounted rate!) and receive my lemonade from the first lemonade stand of the season.

Days like today are when you know Spring is coming for sure. It may get cold and rainy in the coming weeks, but the longer days are on the way.

  Unlocking
sprouts

Day 52 of 365.

Kurt Vonnegut thought that there shouldn't be just four seasons - there should be six. Winter (January, February), Unlocking (March, April), Spring (May, June), Summer (July, August), Autumn (September, October), and Locking (November, December). I think that this theory makes a lot of sense.

So today we went out for a long, long walk in the Unlocking; a hike really. The first true training hike to get ready for our Adirondacks adventures in August. By Dr. Nick's calculations, we probably hiked about 5 miles, and through 1000 feet of elevation. Not bad. Let it be noted, though, that a lot of that elevation still had mushy snow on it, and we slogged up a rather steep incline for an hour with inappropriate gear. Blixa came along, and we let him off the leash for the whole hike. He had the best day ever.

Day 51 of 365.

Went out for Mexican food with friends (B, I hope you don't mind me posting this one!), good company, good food, good times! Before that we had a long walk. I got some good photos today, but I decided to post something different - it's been all snow, nature, grates & urban things around here, so here you go.

Something Else Entirely.
